Elegant black polished jar with matte painted designs, this pot is quite beautiful. The polish has a high shine and the pot has survived the years in excellent condition. The painted designs is that of an avanyu, or water serpent, a design used frequently at San Ildefonso during this period. There is also a beautiful geometric matte-painted design on the lower third of this jar.

Carmelita Dunlap (1925-1999) was Maria Martinez's niece. Because her mother passed away while Carmita was quite young, Maria and her sister Desideria raised Carmelita. In the process, they taught her how to make pottery. She was quite prolific and many of her jars are large. Carmelita was invited to visit President and Mrs Nixon at the White House in 1974 and her works are in the Denver Art Museum and the National Museum of the American Indian.
