This pot was coiled out red clay and slipped with natural red slip. It was fired over an open fire at dawn on a blue sky day, with no wind. At what is presumed to be the peak heat of the fire, the fire is smothered with pulverized dung which causes the clay and slip to turn black. This is known as a reduction atmosphere.

Sally is the granddaughter of Rosita Velarde and Flora Naranjo. She is the daughter of Victoria Butierrez and the sister of Effie Garcia, another well-known potter from Santa Clara.
