This wonderful polychrome Zia jar has all the features that we look for in quality Historic pottery. It is fairly thin for a Zia water jar and is well-proportioned. The minor wear on the rim indicates its probably use.
The paint has historic roots and the focus on holly leaves and berries is charming. Pictured is page 149 from Harlow and Lanmon’s The Pottery of Zia Pueblo (School of American Research Press, Santa Fe, NM; 2003) which shows a clear link in design to the split leaves design in Zia pots from the 1880s.
