Animal images begin to appear at Zia after 1870, according to Francis Harlow and Dwight Lanmon in their important book, The Pottery of Zia Pueblo (School of American Research Press, 2003; page 219). These images include deer and elk, as is evidenced in this canteen. In this canteen, the deer is flanked by naturalistic vegetation.

This canteen has survived the years in remarkable condition. It is very appealing aesthetically as well as historically.
