Steve Lucas is the grandson of Rachel Namingha Nampeyo and great grandson of Annie Healing, Nampeyo's talented eldest daughter. He learned to make pottery from his aunt, Dextra Nampeyo, who is perhaps one of the greatest of the contemporary Hopi artists. Steve has long been recognized as a very talented potter. He learned to make pottery in the traditional way and has been heavily influenced by early Sityatki designs but he also improves upon those designs. We have been asked what the designs represent? Here is one theory: The figures with feelers and red wings are probably insects (note the feelers at the top). The geometric design between the figures with red wings may be an abstracted image of the same insect. Consider the two meander designs at the top as feelers, the two white triangles as wings that come off the body with tail.
