There are four (4) birds on this jar. Two are what Lanmon and Harlow call “Zia birds”.* Please note that the bird’s wing is separated from the body of the bird. This is a characteristic that is found on Zia jars that were collected by the Stevensons in 1887. The other two birds are parrots, which are often seen on Zia jars from 1880s-1920s. The cream-colored slip was applied very thinly, allowing the natural red of the clay to shine through.

There is a folk-art quality to this jar. The birds are funky and one cannot help but smile when looking at this pot.
