Apache baskets often have randomly placed design elements. This basket, on the contrary, has well organized placement of design elements, including groupings of 5 triangles near edge, 3 groups of 4 male figures, 3 crosses, and 2 horses. This regularity leads me to speculate that this basket might have been woven by a Yavapai woman rather than a Western Apache. The Yavapai and Western Apache live next to each other and their baskets are quite similar but it is felt that Yavapai baskets tend to be more symmetrical than Western Apache.
The positive/negative space in the center enhances the petals of the “flower” as it expands out. This is an unusual and pleasing treatment of the design by the weaver.
