The Spanish first came to the Southwest in the 16th century, bringing Christianity to the Native Americans whom they encountered. The cross was adopted by those who accepted the teachings of the missionaries and it was reflected in the jewelry that they made.
This necklace has the design known as the Isleta [Pueblo} cross. Much like a squash blossom necklace, this necklace instead has crosses, including a large cross as the naja. The maker of this necklace was probably working with limited access to the metals which resulted in the use of a combination of brass and silver beads.
Pueblo vintage necklaces such as this rarely come on the market. It has come to us via a private collection.
