Oversized polychrome jars such as this are always desirable, especially those that are early and in excellent condition. While many dealers and collectors would classify this jar as one from Laguna, Dwight Lanmon and Frank Harlow take the position that there simply aren't enough documented jars to distinguish Laguna from Acoma pottery.

Pots with this shape and type of hachure generally date from 1890-1910, as Lanmon and Harlow discuss in The Pottery of Acoma Pueblo (Museum of New Mexico Press: Santa Fe), pp 264-267. This particular example has an intricately developed design that builds on elements that developed in the previous decades.
